Kalø Castle Ruin
One of Denmark's most unique hikes is the trip out to Kalø Castle Ruin. The route is 1.5 km each way, and on parts of the way, you walk along a cobblestone path back from the Middle Ages. The Kalø Castle Ruins are breathtaking, and the view from the Kalø Peninsula is worth the entire trip. There is a parking lot where the route starts.
The story behind the castle ruins
Kalø Castle was built in 1313 by King Erik Menved. The castle was built after a major Jutland peasant uprising had been suppressed. The castle was the first of its kind in Denmark and was thus a modern fortress at the time, with a flank tower and a side wing attached to the main tower. In total, Erik Menved chose to build four castles in Jutland after the peasant uprising.
Kalø Peninsula was an island at that time. Therefore, a dam was built to the mainland. It is the dam you walk on today when you visit Kalø Castle Ruin.
Kalø Castle was among the locals a hated place. These "forced borings" were built to compel the surrounding population to obedience. Therefore, they were not in actual operation for many years. Christoffer the 2nd already accepted in 1320. That these castles should be demolished. Kalø Castle was allowed to remain and was managed by various bailiffs.
Gustav Vasa was imprisoned at Kalø Castle in the years 1518-1519. He then fled and later became the king of Sweden.
