Visit Stevns Fort: A Journey into the Secrets of the Cold War

Stevnsfortet, hidden deep within the area at Stevns Klint, is a time capsule from The Cold WarDiscover this underground fortress that once was a crucial part of Denmark's and NATO's defense. The fortress was strategically positioned as one of the first lines of defense against a possible east-west conflict. Today is a unique and authentic setting where visitors can step into history.

The story behind Stevns Fortress

During the years of the Cold War, Stevnsfort was built between 1951 and 1954 as part of the defense arrangement from 1950-51. Their primary task was to participate in blocking the southern entrance to Øresund and Køge Bay. Together with Langelandsfort, Stevnsfort was to prevent the Warsaw Pact's large fleet capacity in the Baltic Sea from gaining access to the world's oceans. This was among other things achieved by guarding the sea minefields against mine clearance.

Although Stevnsfort lost its strategic significance after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the end of the Cold War, it continued to function as a command and radar station. It was also the headquarters for the "Sound Marine District".

Guided Tours and Authentic Stories

Any visit to Stevnsfortet is an experience. Guided tours take you through the fort's underground tunnels, where you can hear vivid and lively stories about the fort's role, exciting events, and the people who served here. To experience the underground fortress, you need to participate in the guided tours. Please note that the last underground tour departs 2 hours before the museum closes. So go down into the deep corridors and feel the breath of history.

Please note that the guided standard tour includes 3 km of walking and lasts 1.5 hours. Therefore, we do not recommend the visit for younger children, who are likely to disturb the other participants on the guided tour.
