The Sanded Church
Saint Laurenntii Kirke was probably built in the late 14th century. Back then, it was the largest church in the area. However, the sand tended to drift toward the church. The road to the church and cemetery became overgrown. And in 1795, so much sand had accumulated around the church that it was impossible to maintain it. Church services had to cease in 1795. The side has increasingly more sand accumulated around the area near the church. Today, the church is buried in dunes, and only the church tower sticks up.
It is possible to go up the church tower in the summer, where tickets are sold for this at the nearby kiosk. There is also a playground, as well as tables and benches by the kiosk.
Skt. Laurentius is a Catholic saint. His name in Latin means "the honored".He was the protector of sailors and the poor.He was born in Spain around the year 230. The legend says that after the pope's death, he distributed the taxes to the poor. This was against the emperor's order. And therefore he was executed. However, the method of execution was extremely painful. He was placed on a grill rack and slowly roasted. Skt. Laurentius has left traces in many Danish churches, including Roskilde Cathedral.
Skagen received its coat of arms as early as 1535. The grille at the top of Skagen's coat of arms represents the grille of St. Laurentius was roasted. Additionally, there is a fish in the city coat of arms as well as the town's motto: "Voris Hob Thill Gudt Allen," which means "Our hope is only in God."
