Major art experiences in the heart of Vejle

The Vejle area is the perfect holiday destination for those who want plenty of quality experiences without breaking the bank. Vejle offers a number of free experiences, including museums and exhibitions. One of these is Vejle Art Museum, which is definitely worth a visit.

Vejle Art Museum writes itself "Art is inspiration! It is vitamins and spices for life. It is beautiful. Fun. Exciting. And not least challenging“. And this is a very good description of the experience you get at Vejle Art Museum.

One of the many exhibitions

Based on life and everyday life

Vejle Art Museum has chosen to focus on exhibitions and special exhibitions that are based on life and everyday life. It should be experiences everyone can relate to, even if you're not a big art enthusiast. Art reaches far and wide. The great artists of world history, local artists, the constructed realities of the Golden Age, graphic works, portrait art, and much more.

Vejle Art Museum has a unique and fine history. The founding of the museum was established in the 1890s, when a number of wealthy citizens wanted art to be accessible to everyone. Therefore, the donated art to a common museum collection in Vejle.

In 1924, the collection moved into the first permanent museum building. The building was donated by Agnes Benteline Hviid. If it was not successful in attracting enough visitors to make running a museum worthwhile, the plan was to convert the museum into apartments for single women. People flocked to the museum, and since then, Vejle Art Museum has expanded with new extensions. The newest extension is from 2007 and designed by Kim Utzon Architects.

The permanent collection and permanent exhibitions

There are so many good reasons to visit the museum. Some of them are mentioned below:

  • The second-largest collection of graphic works in Denmark. The collection was founded as far back as 1899, when Christian Eckard donated his collection of older European graphics and drawings by Danish artists from his own time to the museum. Hans's collection includes works from approximately 1470 onwards until the end of the 19th century. Many other and newer works have been added.
  • Christian Eckard's collection of approximately 2,000 works also included 51 etchings by Rembrandt.
  • Art collection with paintings from the 19th century to the present day.
  • Wøzner Collection. The collection includes sculptures, watercolors, and pastels created by young experimental artists from the late 1930s to 1945. The works were originally purchased by Max Wørzner, who was a butcher. He had a great interest in contemporary art among young people.
  • Sculptures from 1900 to today.
