Regnvejrsaktiviteter: Sådan planlægger du ferien, når det regner

The family puts on raincoats at the summer house.

You plan rainy weather activities best before the clouds come. Have a plan B for each holiday day: one indoor activity nearby, one activity you can do in rain gear, and a flexible time frame. Check DMI's radar in the morning and choose plan A or plan B based on the specific forecast. It sounds simple, and it is. Still, many Danish vacation days are lost because the family only starts looking for an alternative when the rain is already pounding against the car window and everyone else has had the same idea.

Here is our method. It applies to both a week in a summer house, an extended weekend in a big city, and an autumn holiday with children.

Rain belongs to a Danish holiday

Rain is not bad luck in Denmark. It is part of the climate. According to DMI It rains on average every third day in DenmarkIf you have a week's holiday, it is realistic to expect two or three days with precipitation. It doesn't necessarily mean rain all day, but it means that a holiday plan without a Plan B is a plan with gaps.

Fortunately, the country is well prepared for gray days. Statistics Denmark reports that in 2025, there were registered 17.6 million visits to museum exhibitions distributed across 398 visitor sitesIt is at the level of 2024 and 2023Almost regardless of where in the country you live or are on vacation, there is a museum, an aquarium, an experience center, or a swimming pool within a reasonable driving distance.

There's only one downside: When it rains, everyone has the same idea. Therefore, good planning is not just about knowing what you can do. It also concerns timing, booking, and having an alternative that is not the most obvious.

Read the weather forecast like a meteorologist

The word "rain" in an app says very little. Small showers for 20 minutes and a whole day of heavy rain are two completely different things for a family with a stroller. When you learn to read the numbers, you can save many half days.

Millimeter, heavy rain and cloudburst

The meteorologist measures precipitation in millimeters, and 1 mm corresponds to 1 liter of water per. square meter A couple of millimeters spread over an afternoon is a rainy day. DMI uses fixed thresholds when issuing warnings: Cloudburst is at least 15 mm in 30 minutes, and heavy rain is 24 mm in 6 hours. If a thunderstorm is forecasted, outdoor plans must be completely abandoned. This especially applies to trips along watercourses, on steep slopes, and in low-lying areas. You should also be aware of flooded roads and tunnels when you drive.

Use the radar for the last 48 hours

A rainy day is usually well predicted in the DMI's national forecast and regional forecasts, and when the rain approaches, the radar is the most accurate tool. On days with showers, you can see the "holes" between the showers and schedule your walk or playground visit during a dry interval. A general daily forecast with a rain symbol does not tell you that.

Regional differences are real

Denmark is small, but the weather can divide the country. The 22nd. August 2026, DMI's duty meteorologist wrote about Heavy showers with thunder and hail over Zealand and Funen, while it was dry in the west.If you live in a summer house in Djursland or by the West Coast, a drive of an hour or two can be the way to a dry excursion. It just requires you to check the regional forecast and not just the view the app shows for your address.

How to build a rain plan in five steps

Use this method when planning your holiday from home. It takes about half an hour and saves you many miserable mornings.

  1. Make a list of your fixed points. Write down the experiences that require good weather: beach, amusement park, bike ride, canoeing. They are the ones who need to have a plan B.
  2. Find an indoor alternative within a 45-minute drive. For every outdoor experience, you will find an indoor experience in the same area. So you shouldn't drive through half of Jutland on a rainy day. Close the card Our overview of experiences in Denmark, so you can see what is close to your accommodation.
  3. Check opening hours and booking. Many museums and experience centers have shorter opening hours outside the season, and some are closed on Mondays. Escape rooms, bowling, and certain workshops must be booked in advance. Note it in the plan so you know whether you need to react the evening before.
  4. Have a rain gear plan. Not all rain requires a roof over your head. Choose one experience that actually gets better in the rain: a forest walk with puddles, a walk along a stormy beach, or a guided city tour where you can seek shelter in a café along the way.
  5. Decide the night before and check the radar in the morning. Look at the regional forecast in the evening and choose a preliminary plan. In the morning, you check the radar and make the final decision. Leave early on rainy days, because the popular indoor places fill up quickly after lunch.

Indoor experiences throughout the country

The table shows examples of well-known indoor places divided by regions. It is intended as a starting point. Always check the current opening hours and prices on the venue's own website before you go.

Region Type experience Examples
Copenhagen and surrounding areas Knowledge center, aquarium, museums Experimentarium in Hellerup, The Blue Planet at Kastrup, The National Museum, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek
Fine Culture and adventure H.C. Andersen's House in Odense

Museums that work for the whole family

A museum is no longer synonymous with glass cases and shushing. Many of the largest Danish museums have interactive exhibitions, play areas, and activities for children during the holidays. Moesgaard is a good example of a place where both adults with an interest in culture and 8-year-old children can have a good day. In Bor I in the Aarhus area, we have gathered several ideas in our guide to Top attractions in Aarhus.

Experience centers and knowledge centers

Knowledge centers and aquariums are typically the safest choices for children between 4 and 12 years old because the children can touch, try, and experiment themselves. The disadvantage is that they are the first places to fill up on a rainy day during school holidays. Read more in our article about experience centers with fun and educational activities.

The lesser-known alternatives

The best rainy days are often found outside the big names. Local history museums, art museums in smaller towns, children's sections of libraries, local swimming pools, and bowling centers rarely have queues. A small museum for 90 minutes followed by a swimming pool and hot chocolate can be a better day than four hours in a crowded experience center.

When the raincoat is the best plan

The Danes have a saying about that: There is no bad weather, only bad clothing. It's not entirely true during a cloudburst, but during regular rain, it's surprisingly close.

  • The forest in the rain The scents are stronger, and there are fewer people. Snails, mushrooms, and streams that suddenly run fast are exciting for children.
  • The beach in the wind It is a completely different experience than the beach in sunshine. Along the West Coast, a trip with high waves, sand in your hair, and hot soup afterward is part of the holiday that many remember best.
  • Potholes and rain dance It's free for the smallest ones. Rubber boots and rain pants make all the difference.
  • Walking tour with a café stop Works well for adults. Plan the route so that there is a dry place for every 20. minute

Three things make the rain trip good: clothing that is actually waterproof, a set of dry change of clothes in the car, and a short trip. A rainy walk is an experience. Three hours are a trial. Many of these trips are free, and you can find more ideas in our overview of free experiences.

Avoid forests and beaches when there is a warning of strong wind or thunder. If you hear thunder, you should move away from open beaches and standing trees and seek shelter in a car or a building.

Rainy day activities by age

The same rainy day looks very different with a two-year-old and a teenager. Plan according to the youngest in the family, and give the oldest a part of the decision-making.

0 to 2 years

Less is more. A swimming pool with a baby basin, a library with a play area, or a short walk in puddles is enough. Long drives and large, noisy experience centers quickly become overwhelming, and naps and food still determine the day's rhythm.

3 to 5 years

Aquariums and places with animals work really well. At the summer house, you can make caves out of pillows and blankets, bake buns, or have indoor picnics on the floor. Keep the experiences outdoors for about two hours, plus breaks.

6 to 9 years

Now knowledge centers, interactive museums, and bowling are starting to make sense. Children at this age love tasks: Make a small quiz for the museum visit or let them photograph five things they find the strangest.

10 years and up

Escape rooms, climbing centers, trampoline parks, and the cinema are safe choices. Let the teenager choose one activity for the holiday. It increases the desire to join the rest.

Adults and couples

Art museums, a long lunch, a beer tasting, or a day at a spa are good rainy day plans. Without children, you can also use the rainy weather to visit the museums that would otherwise be overshadowed by the beach.

Our filters on the experience page can sort by participant age, so you can quickly exclude places that don't suit your children. Looking for more ideas across ages, so see our Examples of child-friendly attractions for families.

Stick to the budget, even when it rains

Rainy days are expensive days for many families. When entering, you pay an entrance fee, and a spontaneous trip to an experience center for four people, with lunch and ice cream, can quickly blow the day's budget. Therefore, the rain plan should also have a budget.

  • Set aside a rainy day fund in advance. Count two or three rainy days in a week, and set aside a fixed amount for them.
  • Mixed paid and free. A paid morning and a free afternoon in rain gear halve the price for the day.
  • Check annual passes and combo tickets. If you are visiting the same place twice or have several attractions in the same area, it can be worth it. Check the venue's own terms.
  • Take a packed lunch. Many museums have areas where you are allowed to eat brought food. Ask at the ticket office.

We have gathered several pieces of advice in our Guide to budget travel in Denmark.

The season changes the rain plan

A rainy day in July and a rainy day in February require different planning. In summer, most attractions are open for a long time, but they are also the most crowded. During winter and autumn holidays, there are shorter days, fewer open outdoor attractions, and more special holiday activities at the museums. Here, indoor experiences are often plan A and not plan B. See our guide to Winter holiday in Denmark with experiences, activities, and tipsif you travel in the dark time. In spring, the weather is most changeable, and that makes a flexible plan even more important. See also our advice about Activity planning in spring.

How we view rainy days

We often get asked which attraction to choose when it rains. Our answer is almost always the same: the most important thing is not to find the best attraction, but to find one that is nearby, suitable for your children's age, and not the one that everyone else has chosen. The same day can become a good or a bad holiday experience solely because of the queue at the entrance.

Therefore, we have built our experience portal with a map and filters for season, price, and participant age. When we plan ourselves, we start with the map and see what is within a half-hour drive. Then we use the filters to cut down. Typically, we are left with two or three realistic options, and we usually choose the less known one.

We also believe that rainy weather is underrated. Many of the holiday memories families tell us about are from days when the plan fell apart: the museum they weren't really supposed to visit, or the beach in a storm. Plan so that you don't end up without a solution, but don't try to plan the rain away.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does it rain in Denmark?

According to DMI, it rains on average every third day in Denmark. If you have a week's vacation, it is therefore sensible to plan for two or three days when there will be precipitation at some point. It is rare to have rain all day, so a flexible plan often goes a long way.

When should we give up outdoor plans?

If DMI warns of a cloudburst, which is at least 15 mm of rain in 30 minutes, or thunderstorms, you should move indoors. During regular showers, you can often use the radar to find dry windows. Good rainwear is usually enough in light rain.

What can you do with children on a rainy day at the summer house?

Build a cave, play board games, bake together, have an indoor picnic, or host a movie afternoon. Feel free to combine it with a short walk in rain gear so that the energy comes out. A trip to the local swimming pool is also a good choice with children of all ages.

Should we book indoor attractions in advance?

On rainy days during school holidays, it's a good idea to buy tickets online if the place offers it, and to arrive early. Escape rooms, bowling, and workshops often require reservations. Always check the venue's official website for opening hours and rules.

How do we find indoor experiences close to where we live?

Use the card on our experience page and filter by season, price, and age. This is what is near your holiday address. Please choose two options so you have a backup if the first one is full.
